Get the right help

The right help for your CTP claim

Most people hurt in a NSW motor accident need practical help first: the right insurer, the claim form, a Certificate of Fitness and the dates that matter. Some also need a doctor who knows CTP claims, allied health or legal advice. Here's how to work out which help fits your claim.

Start with what your claim needs now

A CTP claim usually starts with statutory benefits: weekly payments if you can't work, and treatment and care. Most injured people can claim them whoever was at fault. Lodging the claim and keeping it on track is mostly practical work, and plenty of people do it without a lawyer.

What changes the picture is what happens next. If the insurer refuses something, if your injuries are serious, or if a lump sum claim is on the table, more help can make sense. That help might be medical, legal or both.

We're an independent service. We help you understand the scheme, get your claim ready and lodged, and we stay with you while the insurer decides. If your case calls for it, we can introduce you to an independent CTP lawyer, a doctor experienced with CTP claims or allied health. You decide.

When more help tends to matter

These are common signs, not rules. If you're unsure, ask us.

Legal help

  • The insurer denies your claim, or stops or reduces your benefits
  • The insurer says your injury is a threshold injury, or that you were mostly at fault, and you disagree
  • You may have a claim for a lump sum (common law damages)
  • Someone has died in the accident
  • You're outside the 3-month time limit to claim
Do you need a lawyer?

A doctor or allied health

  • You need a Certificate of Fitness, or yours is about to run out
  • You haven't seen a doctor since the accident, or new symptoms have started
  • Your treatment plan isn't clear, or a treatment request was refused
  • You're struggling with anxiety, sleep or mood since the crash

How it works

How we work it out together

Start your claim with us, or call, and we'll look at where your claim is up to. The first step is working out what you actually need. You decide what happens at every stage.

  1. Tell us what happened

The Start your claim form takes about 4 minutes, or you can call us. It tells us how to help.
  2. We work out your next step

Your dates, your insurer and what's missing. Often the next step is simply getting the claim lodged, and you won't need a lawyer for that.
  3. More help, only if you need it

If your case calls for it, we explain why and what your options are. If you'd like an introduction to a lawyer, a doctor or allied health, we ask before we share anything.
  4. Your choice, every time

You can keep your own GP, treating team or lawyer. If we suggest someone, it's only a suggestion.

We're not a law firm or a medical practice. If your case calls for it, we can introduce you to an independent CTP lawyer or a doctor experienced with CTP claims.

Other help

The CTP Legal Advisory Service gives phone advice about statutory benefits for crashes from 1 December 2017. It can't advise on damages claims or a matter already in dispute at the Personal Injury Commission. Do you need a lawyer? explains how to check you're eligible.
